When adding time values, the calculator automatically handles carry-over. For example, if you add 45 minutes + 30 minutes, the result is 1 hour 15 minutes (not 75 minutes). Similarly, 50 seconds + 20 seconds = 1 minute 10 seconds.
Example:
2h 45m 30s + 1h 30m 45s = 4h 16m 15s
Subtracting time works with proper borrowing. If you need to subtract 30 minutes from 15 minutes, the calculator borrows 1 hour (60 minutes), making it 75 minutes - 30 minutes = 45 minutes, and reduces the hours by 1.
Example:
5h 15m 20s - 2h 30m 45s = 2h 44m 35s
The Time Difference calculator is perfect for calculating work hours or event durations. It automatically detects when the end time is earlier than the start time (indicating the time crosses midnight) and calculates correctly.
Example:
Start: 11:00 PM, End: 2:00 AM = 3 hours (crosses midnight)
Decimal hours are commonly used in payroll and billing systems. The conversion is simple: divide minutes by 60. For example, 30 minutes = 0.5 hours, 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 45 minutes = 0.75 hours.
Common Conversions:
Calculate total work hours by entering clock-in and clock-out times. Perfect for timesheets, payroll, and freelance billing. The decimal hours format is ideal for payroll systems.
Track time spent on projects and tasks. Add up multiple time entries to get total project hours. Essential for project managers and consultants.
Calculate total travel time by adding segments together. Useful for trip planning, commute calculations, and scheduling appointments with travel time included.
Subtract break times from total work hours. Calculate net working time by removing lunch breaks, coffee breaks, and other non-working periods.
Calculate how long events, meetings, or activities last. Perfect for event planning, scheduling, and time management. Handles events that span midnight.
Calculate billable hours for clients. The decimal hours format makes it easy to multiply by hourly rates. Download results for invoice documentation.
Use the Add Time tab. Enter your first time value (hours, minutes, seconds), then enter the second time value. Click Calculate and the result will show the total time with automatic carry-over (e.g., 90 minutes becomes 1 hour 30 minutes).
Use the Time Difference tab. Enter your start time and end time. The calculator automatically handles times that cross midnight and shows the duration in hours, minutes, and seconds, plus decimal hours.
Yes! The Time Difference calculator automatically detects when the end time is earlier than the start time (indicating a midnight crossover) and calculates the correct duration. For example, 11:00 PM to 2:00 AM correctly shows 3 hours.
